Threats to bats

We have a very active group with many projects, surveys and visits being undertaken through the year.

Bat Boxes

We regularly check bat boxes within the county.  As well as providing extremely important roosting sites for bats, these surveys help us to understand how and when bats are using the habitats surrounding them.  The results can help us to  improve the advice we give to people wishing to help bats by the inclusion of boxes on their trees.

Autumn/winter

Throughout the year we visit many varied and interesting sites. In the late autumn/winter each weekend we travel around the county searching underground sites and bridges looking for bats in hibernation.  It is normal for us to find several species of bats in these old mine workings.  All members are welcome to join us in these visits and we have a good supply of safety equipment for you to use, hard hats, lights etc..  Although some of the sites we visit can be a little scary, we are very conscious of the danger associated with these visits and try to cater the visits to suit all abilities. However if you come along, please be prepared to sometimes get wet and muddy!!

N.B.  Only members of Cornwall Bat Group will be allowed underground for insurance purposes.

Spring/summer

During the spring and summer our visits are concentrated on monitoring active known roosts within dwellings, bridges and trees.  These surveys invariably involve being out late in the evening recording bats leaving their roosts and listening to their calls with bats detectors.  Most roost owners are extremely proud of "their" bats and welcome us on these evenings to record the bats emerging.  All members are welcome to come along to these visits, not only do you get to see the fabulous spectacle of bats emerging from their roosts you may get to visit some lovely areas of countryside.
